Both storied move in progression but one is form when Emma was thirteen attending camp for the first time. Throughout the story the story jumps back and forth between the past and the present. This is done to increase the connection between the reader and character while also evoking feelings. There is a section in the beginning, middle, and end of the book where Sager wants the reader to picture themselves in Emma's place. This story seems to take place in the present day ad discusses common interests that teens have today. Sager may have been trying to she how the camp made her revert back to her teen years but much of the story seemed inaccurate for her age. While for most of the story Emma is supposed to be a 28-year-old girl, she seems to have the thoughts and decision making skills of a teenager. Throughout the story the reader sees Emma overcome the challenges of returning to the camp to find out what happened to the three girls as she is begins have more struggles with her mental health. After her first camp visit fifteen years ago, Emma developed a form of schizophrenia due to the disappearance of her friends.

While she interacts with other characters and uses them for support, she spends a lot of her time alone. Emma is a very independent character in this novel.During her search she finds that things are not always what they seem and theres more information to every story. The camp has been closed for the duration of her time away, having the chance to return gave her hope she could find out what happened to the missing girls. Fifteen years later Emma is asked to return to the camp as an instructor of art. After returning home from camp Emma developed a struggle with mental health due to the events that happened in the summer, these struggles followed for for life. Over the course of time she was there, her three cabin mates went missing without a trace.
